El suicidio es una de las principales causa de muerte a nivel mundial. Por definición es un tipo de muerte violenta y por tanto sujeto a investigación médico legal. El suicidio, en definitiva, se constituye como una parte importante en el volumen del trabajo que Los Juzgados de Guardia encomienda a los Institutos de Medicina Legal de España.
Suicide Prevention
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. By definition it is a type of violent death and therefore subject to legal medical research. Suicide, in short, constitutes an important part of the volume of work that the Courts of the Guard entrusts to the Institutes of Legal Medicine of Spain.
La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) hace años que viene avisando de la necesidad emergente de abordar este tema que hace que aproximadamente unas 800000 personas se quiten voluntariamente la vida. Incidiendo en esta necesidad de dar visibilidad a un problema de salud pública, tratado hasta hace relativamente poco tiempo como un tabú, la propia OMS, junto a la Asociación Internacional para la Prevención del Suicidio proclama la celebración del Día Internacional para la Prevención del Suicidio todos los días 10 de septiembre.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been warning for years of the emerging need to address this issue that causes approximately 800,000 people to voluntarily take their own lives. Emphasizing the need to give visibility to a public health problem, treated until relatively recently as a taboo, the WHO itself, together with the International Association for the Prevention of Suicide, proclaims the celebration of the International Day for the Prevention of Suicide every September 10th.
El objetivo de esta celebración no es otro que el de la concienciación de población e instituciones y con ello conseguir la prevención del suicidio. El lema usado este año, se acuñó en 2018 y servirá para este año y seguirá vigente en 2020. El lema es “Trabajando Juntos para Prevenir el Suicidio”, dando con ello especial énfasis en la colaboración de todos, pues a todos nos afecta la conducta suicida de una manera u otra.
The objective of this celebration is none other than to raise awareness of the population and institutions and thereby achieve suicide prevention. The slogan used this year was coined in 2018 and will serve this year and will remain in force in 2020. The slogan is «Working Together to Prevent Suicide», thus placing special emphasis on the collaboration of all, as we are all affected by suicidal behavior in one way or another.
Este 10 de septiembre de 2019, la OMS presenta al efecto la campaña 40 segundos para actuar, que culminará el día 10 de octubre coincidiendo con la celebración del Día Mundial de la Salud Mental, que precisamente este año trata sobre la prevención del suicidio.
On September 10, 2019, the WHO presents the 40 seconds of action campaign, which will culminate on October 10, coinciding with the celebration of World Mental Health Day, which precisely this year deals with suicide prevention.
El título de la campaña, está escogido porque “Pese a los progresos, cada 40 segundos alguien se suicida”, hecho que destruye el entorno del suicida y que con la adecuada planificación estratégica, se puede prevenir.
The title of the campaign is chosen because «Despite progress, every 40 seconds someone commits suicide», a fact that destroys the suicidal environment and that with proper strategic planning, can be prevented.
Entre las medidas preventivas, la OMS propone algunas difícilmente realizables como la restricción a los métodos de suicidio, que se puede llevar a cabo en unos casos, pero imposible en otros. Si tenemos en cuenta que plaguicidas, ahorcamientos y el uso de armas de fuego son parte de los métodos mas comunes de suicidio, si que podríamos restringir el acceso a armas de fuego y hacer una restricción parcial de los plaguicidas para asegurar un uso profesional de los mismos. ¿Pero como restringimos un ahorcamiento?
Among the preventive measures, the WHO proposes some that are difficult to carry out, such as restricting suicide methods, which can be carried out in some cases, but impossible in others. If we take into account that pesticides, hangings and the use of firearms are part of the most common methods of suicide, we could restrict access to firearms and make a partial restriction of pesticides to ensure their professional use. But how do we restrict a hanging?
Si nos parece una estrategia mucho mas interesante la información responsable en medios de comunicación , las intervenciones escolares o la educación respecto a la enfermedad mental y la prevención de los estigmas asociados a la misma.
If we find a much more interesting strategy responsible information in the media, school interventions or education regarding mental illness and the prevention of the stigmas associated with it.
In forensic medicine, we cannot but comply with the legal imperative to investigate all violent deaths, regardless of their legal medical aetiology. Once the investigation has been carried out and concluded, the criminal process is usually closed and the Administration of Justice concludes the matter. But those deaths that traumatize the environment of people who decide to take their own lives, can and should provide a valuable input of data that help us learn the reasons and circumstances that cause suicidal behavior and thereby predict and prevent them.

Desde la medicina legal, no podemos sino cumplir con le imperativo legal de investigar toda muerte violenta, sea cual sea su etiología médico legal. Una vez realizada y concluida la investigación, se suele cerrar el proceso penal abierto y desde la Administración de Justicia se da por concluido el asunto. Pero esas muertes que traumatizan el entorno de las personas que deciden quitarse la vida, pueden y deben aportar un valioso aporte de datos que nos ayuden a aprender los motivos y las circunstancias que provocan los comportamientos suicidas y con ello, predecirlos y por tanto prevenirlos.
