Si hablamos de epidemia como extensión rápida de una enfermedad por encima de los casos esperados para dicha enfermedad o de pandemia como aquella epidemia que se presenta simultáneamente en distintos países a nivel planetario, es inevitable que a todos nos venga a la mente la pandemia originada por el SARS-CoV-2.

A woman’s confidence

If we speak of an epidemic as a rapid extension of a disease beyond the expected cases for that disease or of a pandemic as that which occurs simultaneously in different countries worldwide, it is inevitable that the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 comes to mind for all of us.

Existe otro concepto ligado a la epidemiología, y generalmente a las enfermedades infecciosas como es el concepto de endemia. Dicha palabra, se viene a usar en aquellos casos en los que la epidemia se circunscribe a determinadas áreas geográficas y generalmente a determinadas épocas del año. En lenguaje coloquial sería aquella situación en la que la enfermedad en cuestión viene a ser típica de determinada zona, como pueda ser la malaria en determinadas zonas del continente africano.

There is another concept linked to epidemiology, and generally to infectious diseases as the concept of endemic. This word is used in those cases where the epidemic is limited to certain geographical areas and usually at certain times of the year. In colloquial language, it would be the situation in which the disease in question is typical of a certain area, such as malaria in certain parts of the African continent.

Aunque son términos eminentemente creados y usados para las enfermedades infecciosas, es inevitable usarlos para otro tipo de situaciones disruptivas en la vida de cualquier ser humano.

Although they are terms eminently created and used for infectious diseases, it is inevitable to use them for other types of disruptive situations in the life of any human being.

La violencia de género es una de ellas, y la pandemia de COVID-19 no ha variado un ápice su presencia epidémica, pandémica y endémica, a tenor del resurgimiento de noticias en relación a violencia de género y sus muertes derivadas, al menos en España. Ciertamente, con las estadísticas en la mano, a día de publicación de este artículo, en España la cifra de mujeres asesinadas en un contexto de violencia de género es menor respecto a otros años, pero 2020 no es un año como los demás y habría que tener en cuenta consideraciones como las expuestas en Efectos colaterales de la COVID-19.

Gender violence is one of them, and the COVID-19 pandemic has not changed one iota in its epidemic, pandemic and endemic presence, in accordance with the resurgence of news regarding gender violence and its derived deaths, at least in Spain. Certainly, with the statistics in hand, on the day of publication of this article, the number of women murdered in Spain in a context of gender violence is lower than in other years, but 2020 is not a year like any other and considerations such as those set out in Side effects of COVID-19 should be taken into account.

Mucho nos tememos que en el marasmo político en el que nos encontramos inmersos de manera crónica en España, según desde que colores políticos se harán lecturas muy distintas de este particular. ¿Creen ustedes, estimados lectores, que a las mujeres que se encuentran en una situación de violencia de genero les importarán mucho las bochornosas interpretaciones partidistas que los políticos actuales vienen haciendo de la realidad cotidiana de España y los españoles? Creemos que no.

We fear that in the political morass in which we are chronically immersed in Spain, depending on which political colors will make very different readings of this particular. Do you think, dear readers, that women who are in a situation of gender violence will care much about the embarrassing partisan interpretations that current politicians have been making of the daily reality of Spain and Spaniards? We think not.

De hecho, un dato cuanto menos perturbador es que en relación a la denuncia de estos casos, según aparece reflejado en la recientemente publicada Macroencuesta de Violencia contra la Mujer 2019 (y recordemos que dicha encuesta se refiere a datos obtenidos en 2019), el 84,1% de víctimas de violencia sexual (insistimos en que la encuesta se refiere a cualquier violencia contra la mujer sin entrar en la guerra de conceptos con la que nos tiene acostumbrada la clase política) no han buscado ayuda de tipo formal, aun incluso, en los casos en los que los distintos estamentos de personal sanitario si que ha detectado esta situación disruptiva, por lo que vemos que estas mujeres víctimas acuden antes a recibir ayuda médica o psicológica que a servicios legales o sociales. Y conste, que aun con estos datos, el porcentaje de mujeres víctimas de violencia que buscan algún tipo de ayuda es muy pequeño. Concretamente el 66,9% no solicitó ayuda, frente al resto de casos en los que si que acudió a algún tipo de personal sanitario.

In practice, the least disturbing fact is that in relation to the reporting of these cases, as reflected in the recently published Macro-Survey on Violence against Women 2019 (and let’s remember that this survey refers to data obtained in 2019), on 84, 1% of victims of sexual violence (we insist that the survey refers to any violence against women without entering into the war of concepts with which the political class has accustomed us) have not sought formal help, even in cases in which the various levels of health personnel have detected this disruptive situation, so we see that these women victims go before receiving medical or psychological help that legal or social services. And it is clear that even with this data, the percentage of women victims of violence who seek some kind of help is very small. Specifically, 66.9% did not ask for help, compared to the rest of the cases in which they did go to some kind of health personnel.

¿Que lectura sacamos de estas cifras? La inmediata es que las mujeres víctimas de violencia no confían en que las instituciones les ayuden en su infierno particular. ¿Nos seguiremos extrañando al escuchar el mantra de los medios de comunicación por el cual se nos informa que tras determinada muerte, la víctima no había interpuesto denuncias previas?

What reading do we get from these figures? The immediate one is that women victims of violence do not trust institutions to help them in their particular hell. Will we continue to be surprised when we hear the mantra in the media informing us that after a certain death, the victim had not filed any previous complaints?

Abramos los ojos. La mayoría de mujeres víctima de violencia no confía en las instituciones públicas. ¿Que imaginan que pasará en 2020? En este año aciago se sumará esta desconfianza endémica (de ahí la introducción al inicio del artículo) a la circunstancia descrita en el enlace anterior (Efectos colaterales de la COVID-19), por la cual aquellas mujeres que necesitan esa ayuda van a ver aun mas trabada la posibilidad de pedirla en base a la difícil situación epidémica en la que nos encontramos.

Let us open our eyes. Most women victims of violence do not trust public institutions. What do you imagine will happen in 2020? In this fateful year this endemic distrust will be added (hence the introduction at the beginning of the article) to the circumstance described in the previous link (Side effects of COVID-19), by which those women who need that help will be even more hindered from asking for it based on the difficult epidemic situation in which we find ourselves.

Evidentemente ante una situación en la que parece que las administraciones intentan que volvamos a una normalidad lo mas parecida a la realidad prepandemia, los maltratadores en potencia (y por supuesto, los consumados), ven como la situación de dominio que han estado ejerciendo durante confinamientos y cuarentenas, se vuelve a diluir y de ahí que empiece a notarse un repunte subjetivo en las noticias relacionadas con la violencia contra la mujer.

Obviously, in a situation in which it seems that the administrations are trying to return to a normalcy as close as possible to the pre-pandemic reality, the potential abusers (and of course, the consummate), see how the situation of dominance they have been exercising during confinement and quarantine, is diluted again and hence begin to notice a subjective rise in the news related to violence against women.

Let’s not fool ourselves. The situation of gender violence has not improved in 2020 as the cold statistical figures show us. Violence against women has only been somewhat disguised by the COVID-19 pandemic.

No nos engañemos. La situación de la violencia de género no ha mejorado en 2020 tal y como las frías cifras estadísticas nos muestran. La violencia contra la mujer tan solo se ha visto algo maquillada por la pandemia de COVID-19.
