Sería muy interesante preguntar a los ciudadanos ajenos a la ciencia médica, sobre que consideran ellos que es una toxicomanía. Estamos seguros que en un elevadísimo porcentaje, no considerarían al sujeto adicto al alcohol como un toxicómano, por variadas razones. El hecho de que sea una droga legal, arraigada en prácticamente todas las culturas mundiales desde tiempos ancestrales, no es motivo para dejar de considerar el consumo abusivo y descontrolado de sustancia como una adicción.
It would be very interesting to ask the citizens outside of medical science about what they consider to be drug addiction. We are sure that in a very high percentage, they would not consider the subject addicted to alcohol as a drug addict, for various reasons. The fact that it is a legal drug, rooted in practically all world cultures from ancestral times, is no reason to stop considering the abusive and uncontrolled consumption of substance as an addiction.
Socidrogalcohol y CAARFE (Confederación de alcohólicos, Adictos en Rehabilitación y Familiares de España) en colaboración con el laboratorio farmacéutico Lundbeck han presentado un documento titulado “Alcohol, una amistad peligrosa”, con le que han buscado la concienciación sobre los riesgos que se asumen con el consumo abusivo de alcohol. Según se detallaba en la presentación del documento, la evidencia médica indica hasta 60 patologías en relación al consumo de alcohol. Casi todos los esfuerzos institucionales están encaminados a prevenir el consumo de alcohol en jóvenes, pero lo cierto es que en torno al 12% de cánceres en adultos tienen en mayor o menor medida relación con le consumo de alcohol y alrededor de unas 25000 muertes al año se pueden achacar a esta sustancia.
Socidrogalcohol and CAARFE (Confederation of Alcoholics, Addicts in Rehabilitation and Family of Spain) in collaboration with the pharmaceutical laboratory Lundbeck have presented a document entitled «Alcohol, a dangerous friendship», with which they have sought to raise awareness about the risks that are assumed with the abusive consumption of alcohol. As detailed in the presentation of the document, the medical evidence indicates up to 60 pathologies in relation to alcohol consumption. Almost all institutional efforts are aimed at preventing alcohol consumption in young people, but the truth is that about 12% of cancers in adults have a greater or lesser extent related to alcohol consumption and about 25,000 deaths per year can be attributed to this substance.
Las cifras anteriores, son cifras en relación a muertes por circunstancias naturales. Si sumamos a las mismas los accidentes de tráfico, los suicidios o las producidas en contextos de violencia de género por intoxicación del agresor, aumentaremos en gran medida las cifras.

El alcohol está en la sociedad. Esto es un hecho cierto. ¿Existe en atención primaria herramientas de detección y tratamiento del problema? Desgraciada y rotundamente, no. Entramos en este asunto en un circulo vicioso de difícil solución. Si el paciente no manifiesta su problema al médico de atención primaria, difícilmente se podrá derivar al paciente a recibir asistencia especializada y el paciente no lo comunica debido al estigma social asociado al consumo abusivo de alcohol. La única manera de resolver esta situación bloqueada, es que existiesen herramientas adecuadas de detección desde la atención primaria, dotando a todos sus profesionales de la formación adecuada para usarlas.
Alcohol is in society. This is a true fact. Are there tools for detecting and treating the problem in primary care? Disgracefully and emphatically, no. We enter into this matter in a vicious circle of difficult solution. If the patient does not manifest his problem to the primary care physician, it will be difficult to refer the patient to receive specialized assistance and the patient does not communicate it due to the social stigma associated with the abusive consumption of alcohol. The only way to solve this blocked situation is that there are adequate detection tools from primary care, providing all its professionals with the adequate training to use them.
