Es curioso observar como casi todo lo que pasa en la historia de la humanidad se ajusta a un movimiento cíclico, en el cual el inexorable péndulo de las circunstancias termina por traernos de nuevo “plagas” que creíamos superadas.

Desde hace unos meses, estamos siendo bombardeados informatívamente sobre la crisis de los opiáceos que asola los Estados Unidos de América, pudriendo por dentro la economía de la primera potencia mundial, atacando a las empresas a través de sus propios trabajadores hasta el punto de ser considerada esta crisis como una emergencia nacional contra la que llevan meses luchando, que no solo presenta un costo económico y humano debido a las muertes por sobredosis, sino que está disparando los gastos médicos derivados del tratamiento de la epidemia y está ocasionando innumerables pérdidas de horas de trabajo.

En Estados Unidos, la sanidad pública es prácticamente inexistente, de modo que los costosos tratamientos médicos solo pueden ser afrontados por la población a través de los seguros médicos privados que se incluyen en los contratos laborales y parece ser que este es uno de los orígenes del circulo vicioso, en el que ayudados por un aumento de la prescripción de analgésicos opiáceos desde mediados de la década del los años 90 del siglo pasado, hizo que muchos trabajadores se hiciesen adictos a este tipo de fármacos contra el dolor, lo que a su vez hizo que por esa misma adicción, perdiesen su puesto de trabajo y con ello el seguro médico asociado al mismo, abocándolos a tener que continuar consumiendo opiáceos del mercado negro ante la imposibilidad de acceder a canales médicos oficiales. Y con toda esta situación, volvió la heroína, que casi habíamos dado por desaparecida a finales de los locos años ochenta en su forma pura, quedando como un aditivo de la cocaína en su consumo conjunto mezclado.

Lo verdaderamente lacerante es que en España, viendo la situación en la que se encuentra Estados Unidos, no somos capaces de aprender de ello y se puede observar un repunte preocupante de prescripciones de analgésicos mayores que puede recordar a la situación que ha llevado a los Estados Unidos a la situación de emergencia sanitaria en que se encuentra en la actualidad. Es cierto que la sanidad publica española no tiene nada que ver con la sanidad privada estadounidense y en España, no quedaría desasistida la ciudadanía por el simple hecho de quedar desempleada, pero si que es verdad que se están sentando las bases para aumentar la adicción a fármacos opiáceos de la población con la gran prescripción de los mismos, incluso para situaciones médicas donde dicha prescripción podría considerarse exagerada. La Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios, así lo advierte en una interesante nota informativa titulada Fentanilo de liberación inmediata: importancia de respetar las condiciones de uso autorizadas, pidiendo con ello que los profesionales sanitarios se ciñan al uso autorizado de esta sustancia a fin de controlar su uso y evitar riesgos de sobre utilización innecesaria, abuso y finalmente dependencia.

Su futura aplicación en seres humanos podrían abrir nuevos caminos para lograr tratamientos analgésicos mayores mas seguros y con menos poder adictivo.
